Zen Coding high-speed HTML shorthand plug-in updated

zencoding

Zen Coding made quite a splash when we first covered it almost a year ago. For those who aren’t familiar, Zen is a fantastic form of shorthand for quickly hand-coding HTML. And today, a new version is out!

Here are some of the goodies version 0.7 brings to the party:

  • Text nodes: Writing something like a[href=/]{Click here} now works, and puts “Click here” within the link.
  • New actions added: Increment/decrement number under cursor, evaluate math expressions, and more.
  • Wrap with Abbreviation was upgraded.

There are several other improvements but they’re all rather technical. If you use Zen Coding (or are intrigued by the concept) go ahead and read the release notes for this new version.

Zen Coding has official implementations for a ton of editors, including TextMate, Apatana, Coda, E2, Komodo, Notepad++, PSPad, and more. It also has unofficial builds for Vim, UltraEdit, Visual Studio and more.

If you want to play with Zen Coding without installing it, you can use the online demo to see some of its magic in action.

Parrot Asteroid CK, Asteroid Nav, Asteroid 2DIN infotainment systems: hands-on (video)

At last year’s CES, Parrot unveiled its Asteroid car receiver — a nifty little head unit that brought Android apps to a driver’s dashboard. Today, the company expanded its infotainment reach with three new in-car systems: the Asteroid CK, Asteroid Nav, and Asteroid 2DIN. Much like its predecessor, the Asteroid CK features a 3.2-inch color display, and can be attached directly to a vehicle’s dashboard. This Bluetooth-powered, Gingerbread (2.3.4)-laced hands-free system connects to the web via tethered phone or 3G key, giving users access to a host of geolocation services, driving assistance features and streaming music. The device also comes with a wireless remote, and features voice recognition capabilities that allow users to place calls or browse their music libraries without taking their hands off the wheel. The Asteroid Nav, meanwhile, features a five-inch, capacitive multi-touch display and offers many of the same functions you’ll find on the CK, along with an enhanced onscreen navigation system. At the larger end of the spectrum lurks the Asteroid 2DIN: a “2DIN-connected multimedia car radio” designed to fit within the central column of a car’s dashboard. Here, you’ll be able to take advantage of hands-free calling, music streaming services and RDS text+ service, along with an array of online services and navigation functions. The 2DIN also packs no less than two inputs, with one designed for rearview camera displays, and one for video output. No word yet on pricing or availability, but be sure to check out our hands-on video, after the break.

Joe Pollicino contributed to this report.

Dell Streak 7 Review

Because of its 7-inch display screen, the Dell Streak 7 is probably the smallest tablet computers on the market. Many people may find this a disadvantage, but its size provides it with supreme mobility. Additionally, it has some fantastic specifications such as highly effective processor chip, 4G, and also to top it all off it features a comparatively low cost. How exactly does it compare with other Google android tablet computers out there? Positive points about the Dell Streak 7 [...]

Cook Anywhere You Please on This New Induction Range [Homemod]

Be it gas, electric, or induction, ranges have held onto a vestigial limb—a finite, unmovable set of areas to do the actual cooking. This new induction cooktop from Thermador, however, is smart enough to heat anywhere there’s a pot. More »

A Cautionary CES Tale: What Tablet Makers Can Learn From Sins Past

We were promised such great things at CES 2011. We were told the coming year would bring worthy competitors to the mass-market consumer tablet space, an arena pioneered by the iPad. Upstart vendors didn’t deliver, and here’s what they can learn from their mistakes.

Boomshine is a soothing-yet-frustrating time waster

boomshine

One click; just one single well-aimed click. That’s all you get in Boomshine.

That single click triggers a chain reaction; circles start exploding, and other circles colliding with the shockwaves explode as well, creating their own shockwaves, which then catch other circles.

It’s been done before, yes, but this one is a great iteration. The soundtrack is mellow, with lots of piano and some nice percussion (not electronic – it sounds like drums).

At each level you need to make a certain number of circles explode to go on to the next level. I got up to level 12, where you get 60 circles and need to make 55 of them explode. And then I kept trying and trying, but simply couldn’t get it. I did get to 54 circles a couple of times, but as they say, you don’t get points for trying.

There’s no time limit, so you can carefully study the pattern of motion and place your click at the exact right place to create the best chain reaction. I’ve found that clicking near the middle of the screen works quite well, especially if the balls are slowly moving in that direction. By the time the first shockwave dies off, the oncoming balls usually hit it and the chain reaction continues.

What level did you reach? Screenshots please!

Mac OS X Lion Preview 2 released, introduces mega exciting leather bound iCal skin

This is one of those posts that could probably be condensed into a tweet: Apple has released the second Preview of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. If you’re running Preview 1, it looks like you’ll first receive a small update via Software Update, and then you can download Preview 2 from the Mac App Store.

There has been some speculation that Apple is getting close to a release or Golden Master build, but judging by 9to5 Mac’s initial findings there’s definitely some way to go. The Golden Master will probably appear at, or just before, the Apple WWDC in June.

So far, it’s looking like the only changes in Preview 2 are the leather bound iCal skin that you can see above, and the main iChat window now combines your AIM, Bonjour and Jabber contacts, like Adium. We’re sure that more details will emerge throughout the day, though, and there’s bound to be lots of invisible changes, too. We’ll update this post when we find out more.

Security firm RSA attacked using Excel-Flash one-two sucker punch

RSA attacked using Flash vulnerability

It has emerged that the underlying cause of RSA’s SecurID gaffe was the recently-reported zero-day vulnerability found in Adobe’s Flash Player.

The exploit, which used specially-crafted Flash embedding in Excel spreadsheets, was first reported on March 15 and has since been fixed. RSA was hacked sometime in the first half of March when an employee was successfully spear phished and opened an infected spreadsheet. As soon as the spreadsheet was opened, an advanced persistent threat (APT) — a backdoor Trojan — called Poison Ivy was installed. From there, the attackers basically had free reign of RSA’s internal network, which led to the eventual dissemination of data pertaining to RSA’s two-factor authenticators.

The attack is reminiscent of the APTs used in the China vs. Google attacks from last year — and indeed, Uri Rivner, the head of new technologies at RSA is quick to point out that that other big companies are being attacked, too: “The number of enterprises hit by APTs grows by the month; and the range of APT targets includes just about every industry. Unofficial tallies number dozens of mega corporations attacked [...] These companies deploy any imaginable combination of state-of-the-art perimeter and end-point security controls, and use all imaginable combinations of security operations and security controls. Yet still the determined attackers find their way in.”

What we’d like to know, though, is whether the attack on RSA was caused by Adobe’s lackadaisical approach to patching Flash — or was it the other way around? Was it the RSA attack that first brought the zero-day vulnerability to Adobe’s attention?

Mobee’s Magic Feet and Power Bar juice up Mac peripherals, no more battery swapping for you

Mobee’s no stranger to the world of Mac peripherals these days, and you would’ve already come across the brand if swapping batteries is too much for you. Following its Magic Charger (for Apple’s Magic Mouse) and Magic Bar (for Apple’s wireless keyboard and Magic Trackpad), at this year’s CES the company’s decided to dish out an all-on-one charging station that features a second inductive charging pad plus four USB ports. But of course, there’s a trade-off for this big daddy: in addition to the USB connection to your Mac, the Magic Feet also requires an AC adapter. However, given that each device has a battery life of up to 10 days only, this external power will actually come in handy for night time charging.

Alternatively, if you’re not a fan of clogging up desk space with a charging station, then you can consider Mobee’s Power Bar. Unlike its inductive-charging counterpart, this stick simply adds a 10-day battery and a micro-USB port to the Magic Trackpad, thus letting you plug-and-charge when needed. Oddly enough, Mobee doesn’t say whether the Power Bar is also compatible with Apple’s wireless keyboard, but the response we received was that it isn’t a matter of technical limitation; but rather, it’s simply that the company believes the Magic Bar is the better solution for owners of the wireless keyboard. Well, we’ll let you be the judge.
